Tom Bahrman practices in the area of business
transactions and planning, with emphasis in technology
and computer law. His interests in public policy lead
him to participate in the OSB's Computer and Electronic
Information Workgroup advising the 2001 and 2003 Oregon
Legislatures on legal issues related to the technology
industry. He was actively involved in passage of ORS
84.001 to 84.061, effective June 22, 2001, adopting the
Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA). Tom received
his law degree from Willamette University College of
Law, and earned a Master of Business Administration
degree from the Atkinson Graduate School of Management
at Willamette. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in
Computer Science/Business, with a minor in Mathematics,
at the University of Puget Sound.
Jacob J. Carroll

Jacob J. Carroll is in-house counsel to
Digimarc Corporation located in Beaverton, Oregon.
His work focuses predominately on intellectual property
and information technology transactions concerning
digital watermarking and identification solutions.
Previously, he was an Assistant Attorney General in the
Department of Justice, General Counsel, Business
Transactions Section, Intellectual Property and
Information Technology Group working on technology
transfers, sponsored research agreements, intellectual
property and information technology contracts. Jacob
graduated from the University of Washington School of
Law (LL.M), Syracuse University (J.D., M.S., cum laude),
and Marquette University (B.A.). He was admitted to the

Martin F. Medeiros practices at Preston Gates & Ellis
LLP in the firm's Intellectual Property and Global
Telecommunications and Media Groups. Martin has
extensive experience drafting, negotiating and
establishing manufacturing and telecommunications
services for North American companies in China. He
represents clients, domestically and internationally, in
the areas of intellectual property, technology transfer
and commercial law. He works with startups, as well as
publicly traded entities in various industries,
including information technology, telecommunications,
e-commerce, biotechnology, alternative energy,
manufacturing, broadcasting and professional services.
He advises and negotiates on behalf of publicly traded
companies that acquire or alienate patents, trade
secrets, copyrights, trademarks and other assets. Prior
to joining Preston Gates, Martin managed technology
acquisition teams for large publicly traded
corporations.
Martin is a frequent lecturer and author on topics such
as telecommunications transactions, open source product
development, intellectual property valuation,
outsourcing, technology labor, and technology transfer.
Martin is chair-elect of the Oregon State Bar Computer
and Internet Law Section and is on the board of
directors of the Oregon Law Institute, Oregon Bioscience

Renée Rothauge is a Pacific Northwest trial attorney
specializing in intellectual property and complex
business disputes. She also leads the firm's
intellectual property group.
Recently, Chambers USA named her one of Oregon’s
top commercial litigators having "come to the attention
of peers and clients during a number of large scale jury
trials." Ms. Rothauge has tried multimillion dollar
cases to verdict for DOW AgroSciences (a subsidiary of
The Dow Chemical Co.), Asiana Airlines (a subsidiary of
the Khumo Tire Group) and other Pacific Northwest
businesses.
She serves on the Executive Committee for Oregon State
Bar’s Business Litigation and Computer/Internet Law
sections. Ms. Rothauge carries an AV designation by
Martindale Hubbell and was recognized as an Oregon Super
Lawyer in intellectual property litigation. She was also
selected by Oregon Super Lawyers as one of Oregon's Top
25 women lawyers.
Ms. Rothauge works in the biotechnology, aeronautics,
computer and high-tech, e-commerce and real estate
industries. She also represents retailers and

providers and elder care and nursing facilities owners.
Ms. Rothauge’s current scope of representative trial
experience:
Successfully tried a breach of lease and declaratory
judgment action against a large regional hotel chain
over a land and facility lease.
Successfully defended a claim of trade secret
misappropriation and breach of a non-compete agreement
for a healthcare provider.
Successfully defended a patent infringement case
involving canola oil and obtaining a favorable ruling of
inequitable conduct (currently on appeal before the
Federal Circuit).
Successfully defended an investment firm in a
misappropriation of trade secret case.
Successfully defended a claim for breach of an
international aircraft lease.
Successfully defended a contractor for claims stemming
from the construction of a faulty storm drain system.
Her intellectual property experience includes litigating
a trade secret misappropriation and patent infringement
case for an Oregon biotechnology company, and a trade
secret misappropriation, breach of non-competition
agreement and patent infringement case for an
international wood product equipment company. She has
handled copyright cases for talent, handled over 40
trademark infringement matters, and handled numerous
domain name/cybersquatting disputes.
Ms. Rothauge also litigates partner and corporate
shareholder disputes, including executive divorces. She
has advised on and litigated well over 50
non-competition, non-solicitation and non-disclosure
agreements.

Heather worked as General Counsel for DecisionPoint
Software. Heather has been a member of the Oregon and

community college and then to the University of
Washington. He holds a B.S. in Robotic Heuristics.
Several years in Manufacturing Engineering for
commercial airline propulsion systems were followed by
several years in System, Network & Database
Administration for dot-com businesses.
Debating Copyright questions with co-workers, he
realized that more legal knowledge would be an
advantage, and entered the University of Washington
School of Law full time. He held his dot-com job until
he graduated and moved to Portland.
He is a member of the bar in Oregon and in Washington.
He volunteers his time to Multnomah Legal Aid, and
handles open-source licensing questions for a small
software company in Portland. For 2007, he chairs the

Karen Dana Oster is a patent prosecutor who specializes
in obtaining patents for software, business methods,
mechanical devices, and electrical apparatus. Her
practice focuses on writing patent applications and
guiding them through the patent prosecution process at
the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Karen
also regularly prepares patentability, noninfringement,
and infringement opinions. Strategic analysis and

Karen has been a practicing patent prosecutor since

Timothy E. Siegel is a patent attorney in solo practice
